Background: Thalassemia refers to a group of genetic disorders of globin chain production in which there is an imbalance between alpha globin and beta globin chain. Iron overload in patients with beta-thalassemia major (BTM) leads to alterations in the arterial structures and the thickness of the carotid arteries. Carotid artery doppler is a non-invasive screening tool to identify children at increased risk of atherosclerosis.
