Abstract

Background: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a significant cause of morbidity and
mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Mitral stenosis (MS),
sequalae of RHD, can lead to left atrial (LA) strain and heart failure. Balloon mitral valvotomy
(BMV) is a therapeutic intervention aimed at alleviating the obstruction in MS patients. This
study investigates the impact of BMV on LA strain in patients with severe MS due to RHD.
