Background Chronic hyperglycemia is a hallmark of diabetes mellitus, a complex chronic metabolic disease that can result in a number of microvascular and macrovascular problems. Since it is frequently asymptomatic in its most curable stages, early identification is essential. Timely intervention depends on routine assessments to determine the degree of retinopathy. Preventing the advancement of DR requires identifying modifiable risk factors, such as high blood sugar and hypertension. Timely surveillance and pan-retinal photocoagulation can greatly lower the likelihood of visual impairment, even though definitive treatments for DR are yet unclear. Thus, it is crucial for public health to set up effective screening programs that emphasise routine retinal exams and identify low-risk categories for less frequent monitoring.
