Abstract

Road traffic accidents can cause injuries that range from a minor one to life threatening ones. According to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways a total of 461312 road accidents occurred in the year 2022 in India and claimed 168491 lives. In Assam there were a total of 7023 road accidents covering 1.52% share in all India.1 Fractures of skull are one of the severe injuries resulting from such accidents. This study was conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Diphu Medical College & Hospital, Diphu for a period of one calendar year from 1st January 2023 to 31st December 2023. A total of 412 autopsies were done in the Dept of forensic Medicine, DMCH and out of which, a total of RTA cases were 86. This study aims to analyze different pattern of skull fractures and to assess the various socio-demographic profiles among the victims of road traffic accidents. Of the total 86 cases, most common age group was 21 to 30 years and maximum cases occured during winter season and subdural haemorrhage was the most common intracranial haemorrhage. Understanding these patterns within the local context of Diphu can aid in tailoring preventive measures and improving trauma care services.
