Background: In India, 70% of children between 6 to 59 months have anemia among which the cause in >50% is iron deficiency anemia (IDA) which also coincides with the peak incidence of febrile seizure, i.e, 14 to 18 months of age. Considering the age prevalence of iron deficiency anemia and febrile convulsion which are the same, the role of iron in the metabolism of neurotransmitters (such as GABA and serotonin) and some enzymes (such as monoamine and aldehyde oxidase), the function of haemoglobin in conveying oxygen to the brain and since fever can exacerbate symptoms that result from anemia, a relationship between iron deficiency anemia and febrile convulsions is probable.
